Catfish Identification: Blue, Channel or Flathead?
Color won’t tell you. Size definitely won’t. The anal fin will — and in some states, getting it wrong is a citation rather than an embarrassment.
Channel, blue and flathead catfish are three different animals that happen to share a name, and fishing them the same way is the most common reason people struggle.
Channels are opportunistic scavengers that will eat almost anything and are the right target for most anglers most of the time. Blues are open-water predators that want fresh cut bait and move with the seasons. Flatheads are ambush hunters that mostly want live bait and mostly won’t leave heavy cover to get it. These guides cover identification, behavior, seasonal patterns, and how to target each one deliberately rather than hoping.
